Arne Slot is no longer Liverpool manager after the club decided to end his tenure following a review of the 2025/26 season.
The Dutchman leaves Anfield after talks with Liverpool’s hierarchy in the aftermath of a disappointing campaign. With Slot now out, former Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola has emerged as the leading contender to take charge ahead of the new season.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano first reported on Saturday that Liverpool and Slot had agreed to part ways following an end-of-season review, with Iraola identified as the clear favourite to replace him.
Slot arrived at Anfield in 2024 as the successor to Jürgen Klopp and enjoyed a bright start to life on Merseyside. However, a difficult 2025/26 campaign saw Liverpool fall short of expectations, with inconsistent performances and disappointing results increasing pressure on the manager as the season progressed.
The club eventually opted for a change in direction after assessing the campaign and its plans for the future.
Liverpool later confirmed Slot’s departure, bringing an end to a tenure that had begun with considerable optimism following Klopp’s exit.
Attention has now shifted to the search for a new manager, with Iraola understood to be Liverpool’s preferred choice.
The Spaniard enhanced his reputation during his time at Bournemouth, earning praise for an energetic, attacking style of football and his ability to compete against wealthier clubs. His work on the south coast has made him one of the most highly-rated coaches in the Premier League.
Liverpool’s hierarchy are believed to see Iraola as a strong fit for the club’s long-term vision, and discussions over a possible appointment are expected to intensify in the coming days.
While the club thanked Slot for his efforts, Liverpool will now begin preparations for the 2026/27 season under new leadership as they seek to return to the top of English and European football.
