Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has called on Nigerian youths to actively participate in the country’s democratic process by registering to vote and obtaining their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).
Obi made the appeal in a message shared on his X handle on Monday, where he reflected on Nigeria’s absence from the 2026 FIFA World Cup while commending the global recognition being earned by Nigerian talents in entertainment and sports.
According to him, watching Nigerian music stars Davido, Burna Boy and Rema perform during the opening ceremony of the 2026 World Cup provided some comfort despite Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the tournament.
“After watching the performances of Davido, Burna Boy, and Rema at the opening of the 2026 World Cup—at a time when Nigeria, the giant of Africa, is absent—I felt a measure of consolation,” Obi said.
He also highlighted the achievements of Nigerians excelling abroad, noting that many players of Nigerian descent are representing other countries on the international stage.
“This was reinforced by the fact that many Nigerians playing for clubs worldwide are representing other countries. Felix Nmecha, for instance, set a record by scoring the fastest goal at six minutes for Germany,” he stated.
Addressing young Nigerians directly, Obi stressed that they have a greater stake in the country’s future than the older generation.
“You are more of stakeholders in Nigeria’s future than I am. I am 64 years old; by God’s grace, much of my journey is behind me, while yours lies ahead,” he said.
The former Anambra State governor urged young people to see their voter cards as a powerful instrument for political change and national development.
“It is therefore imperative that you rise to the challenge by obtaining your PVC, your most powerful tool for driving the change you desire,” Obi said.
He further noted that more than 15 million Nigerians have attained voting age over the last three years, a demographic he believes can significantly influence future elections.
“In the last three years alone, over 15 million Nigerians have turned 18—enough to decide who becomes President, Governor, Senator, Member of the House, or Local Government Chairman. Indeed, enough to shape the nation’s future,” he added.
While acknowledging widespread distrust of politics and political parties among young people, Obi cautioned against political apathy.
“I know many of you are sceptical about politics and political parties. I understand why, but scepticism must not become surrender,” he said.
He encouraged youths to organise themselves within their communities, schools, workplaces and social groups to engage in constructive political participation and demand accountability from leaders.
“You do not need to belong to any party or wait for anyone to organise you. Organise yourselves in your streets, campuses, communities, workplaces, churches, mosques, and social groups. Mobilise, debate, demand accountability, and take part in choosing those you wish to entrust with leadership,” Obi stated.
The former presidential candidate also offered to engage directly with organised youth groups interested in discussing his vision for Nigeria.
“If you are organised and wish to hear directly from me, invite me. I will come and share my plans for you and our nation,” he said.
Obi concluded his message by urging young Nigerians not to leave decisions about the country’s future in the hands of others.
“Do not sit on the sidelines while others decide your future.
“I appeal to you to register and vote. Your vote can shape who becomes the next President of our country.
“My young friends, this is your country. Take it back.
