
Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum
In commemoration of the Islamic New Year, 1st Muharram 1448 AH (Tuesday, June 16, 2026), Governor Babagana Umara Zulum has declared a statewide public holiday.
The announcement was contained in a statement issued and signed by the Borno State Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, Professor Mohammed Usman Tar, and made available to journalists in Maiduguri on Monday.
The statement read:
“This is to inform the general public that His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Borno State, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, CON, mni, FNSE, has declared Tuesday, the 1st day of Muharram 1448 After Hijrah (AH), corresponding to June 16, 2026, as a public holiday to commemorate the beginning of the Islamic Calendar Year 1448 AH.
“All citizens are therefore enjoined to reflect on the significance of this important date and rededicate themselves to peaceful coexistence, service to humanity, and the development of our dear state.
“Citizens are also encouraged to embrace the virtues of unity, solidarity, togetherness, tolerance, justice, mercy, and multiculturalism, which are essential for promoting harmony in diversity and fostering the unity of mankind.
“The government and people of Borno State remain committed to the unity, prosperity, and continued existence of Nigeria, as well as to projecting the country’s positive image among the comity of nations in an increasingly globalised world.
“Governor Zulum further urges the people of Borno State to pray for the peace and progress of both Borno and Nigeria and calls on all communities and faith groups to live together in harmony and mutual understanding.”
The statement added that the governor wished all residents a peaceful and rewarding Islamic New Year celebration.
