Suspected Boko Haram terrorists have abducted an unspecified number of students sitting for the National Examinations Council (NECO) examination at Government Day Secondary School in Lassa, Askira/Uba Local Government Area of Borno State.
The attackers reportedly invaded the school on Monday morning, firing gunshots before taking away students and some women selling food within the school premises.
The Borno State Police Command confirmed the incident and said security operatives engaged the attackers, preventing an even larger abduction. Police spokesperson Nahum Daso said, “Security forces confronted them…
The CP deployed the Area Commander in Askira/Uba. They are currently combing the bush.”
Local sources according to Punch Online report, said the assailants arrived on motorcycles and were dressed in military and forest guard uniforms to gain access to the area. A teacher was reportedly killed during the attack, while another sustained gunshot injuries and is receiving treatment.
Authorities have yet to confirm the exact number of students and other victims taken by the terrorists. A community leader said efforts are ongoing to verify the identities and number of those abducted.
The Chairman of Askira/Uba Local Government Area declined to comment, saying officials were handling the emergency. Security agencies have intensified search operations in nearby forests as efforts continue to rescue the abducted victims.
