Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, says his administration is ready to support plans by Egyptian pharmaceutical company, Utopia, to establish a drug manufacturing plant in the state, describing the proposed investment as a major step towards industrial growth and economic development.
The governor disclosed this on Wednesday in a post on his official X account after receiving a delegation from the company, led by Dr. Kamel Mohamed and facilitated by Eze Apostle Gift Chibuzor Chinyere.
According to Otti, the proposed project goes beyond the distribution of pharmaceutical products and is expected to create jobs, promote technology transfer and contribute significantly to the state’s economy.
“Today, we received a delegation from Utopia, an Egyptian pharmaceutical company, led by Dr. Kamel Mohamed and facilitated by Eze Apostle Gift Chibuzor Chinyere,” the governor wrote.
Expressing optimism over the proposal, he added: “I am excited about their proposal to establish a drug manufacturing plant in Abia State. Beyond selling products, this is about production, job creation, technology transfer, and boosting our State’s GDP.”
Otti assured the investors of his administration’s commitment to creating an enabling environment for the project to succeed.
“As a government, we are committed to supporting this investment. Land will be provided, and we encourage consideration of the Ukwa or Osisioma axis, where steady power supply from Geometric Power is available,” he said.
The governor further expressed confidence that the partnership could position Abia as a leading pharmaceutical production centre in the region.
“This partnership has the potential to make Abia a hub for advanced pharmaceutical technology in Nigeria and West Africa. Our administration will give every necessary support to ensure its success,” Otti stated.
The proposed investment is expected to strengthen Abia’s industrial base while expanding local pharmaceutical manufacturing capacity and attracting additional investments into the state.
