The National Universities Commission (NUC) has approved Confluence
University of Science and Technology, Osara, Kogi State, as the 50th
state university in Nigeria.
Executive Secretary of the Commission, Prof. Abubakar Rasheed, who
announced the approval of the university on Tuesday in Abuja, during a
visit by Governor Yahaya Bello, said the specialised institution will
be a propeller for a rapid development in the country.
He lauded the governor for his commitment to education development and
assured of support for the university.
On his part, Bello, who expressed delight for the approval, said the
new university “is a dream come true for us, for the youths, for the
good people and even for the bad people of Kogi State.”
“In view of the location of the state and in view of the abundant
mineral resources across the state, it is pertinent for Kogi to have a
university that will train and feed the industries in the state,
especially the giant Ajaokuta steel industry.
According to him, the idea to establish the university was not to
serve the people of Kogi only but Nigeria and humanity at large.
He promised to provide fund for the take-off of the university noting
that the dream is to make the institution up to international standard
It would be recalled that in July this year, the Kogi State Government
has approved a bill for the establishment of Confluence University of
Science and Technology, Osara, in the state.
The move was aimed at training manpower in science related courses to
feed available industries in the state.
The State Commissioner for Information and Communication, Kingsley
Fanwo, disclosed this at a news conference disclosed that in Lokoja,
the state capital.
He said the essence for the establishment of the university was to
focus on science and technology related courses to take the state to
the next level in industrial development
