Scene of the train accident
Several passengers sustained injuries on Monday morning following a train incident along the Abuja–Kaduna rail corridor, the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has confirmed.
The incident occurred near Asham Train Station at about 10:30 a.m., according to a statement issued by the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the NRC, Kayode Opeifa.
Opeifa explained that the situation arose when the rear locomotive came into contact with the passenger coach directly behind it due to a coupling malfunction.
He said the affected passengers received immediate medical attention and were taken to nearby hospitals for further treatment.
“The injured passengers were promptly attended to and transported to nearby medical facilities for proper care,” he stated, adding that no fatalities were recorded in the incident.
The NRC boss also noted that emergency response procedures were activated immediately after the incident occurred, with technical teams deployed to the scene to address the situation.
According to him, the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau has also arrived at the site to carry out a detailed investigation in line with established safety protocols.
The statement further revealed that the train eventually continued its journey and arrived at Idu Train Station at approximately 10:39 a.m., though it was delayed by about 38 minutes. The delay allowed authorities to detach the affected locomotive and coach before the train resumed movement.
The Nigerian Railway Corporation assured passengers and the general public that safety remains a top priority and that steps are being taken to prevent similar incidents in the future.
It added that additional updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
