Amazon‘s CEO, Andy Jassy, has revealed that the company’s adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) will likely reduce the number of office workers needed.
In an email to employees, Jassy wrote, “We will need fewer people doing some of the jobs that are being done today, and more people doing other types of jobs.”
According to Jassy, AI efficiency gains will lead to fewer office workers in the next few years. Amazon, which employs around 1.5 million people worldwide, with approximately 350,000 office employees, doesn’t anticipate large-scale layoffs but expects vacant positions won’t be refilled.
“We’re focusing on so-called AI agents software capable of independently performing tasks,” Jassy explained.
“Agents will be teammates that we can call on at various stages of our work.”
He encouraged employees to experiment with AI whenever possible.
This development reflects growing concerns about AI’s impact on the job market. Other companies, like Spotify and Duolingo, are also exploring AI’s potential to replace certain roles.
As Jassy noted, “It’s difficult to predict how the overall workforce will evolve,” but one thing is clear – AI will play a significant role in shaping Amazon’s workforce.
