APLORI Center of Excellence strengthens partnership with UNIJOS for ornithological, biological research training

By CHRISTIANA LOT, Jos –

The management of the APLORI Center of Excellence has deepened its collaboration with the University of Jos (UNIJOS), focusing on extensive ornithological and biological research training.

Recently, the University of Jos approved the transformation of the Dr. Anastasio Paul Leventis Ornithological Research Institute (APLORI), located within the University of Jos Biological Conservatory, into a full-fledged APLORI Center of Excellence for ornithological training and research after 20 years of dedicated service.

Leading a management delegation during a recent courtesy visit to the University of Jos, Dr. Anastasia Paul Leventis, the founder of the APLORI Center of Excellence, expressed satisfaction with the institute’s integration within the university framework.

Dr. Leventis acknowledged the degree of independence gained by the institute, thanks to the support from the university’s management.

He stated, “This balance has fostered a productive and healthy relationship, enabling the institute to collaborate effectively with various university departments and external technical partners.”

He further emphasized that the university’s recognition as a center of excellence significantly enhances its reputation and impact—not only in Nigeria but on an international scale.

“This institute has established connections worldwide, particularly in ethology and biological sciences. Moreover, it has actively contributed to addressing global challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and other pressing issues that impact humanity as a whole.”

Dr. Leventis added, “This university, with its capable team and excellent operational standards, is well-positioned to take the lead in these critical areas. In fact, it stands out among institutions in Nigeria, arguably surpassing any other university in the country in this regard.”

In response, Professor Tanko Ishaya, Vice Chancellor of the University of Jos, affirmed that Anastasio Paul Leventis is recognized globally for the vision he has provided to society.

He noted, “Upon realizing that the institute had reached its 20-year milestone, the university decided to evolve it into a fully-fledged center of excellence for teaching and research.”

Additionally, the Vice-Chancellor mentioned that the university management has adopted a strategy of encouraging APLORI management to seek funding that would support various research initiatives, thereby enhancing the institute’s sustainability.

Meanwhile, Sir Philip Hall, Chairman of the APLORI Board, reflected on the journey over the past two decades.

“We have come a long way, and it was wonderful to celebrate this milestone earlier this year. For those who may not know, during these two decades, we have graduated 177 master’s students. Impressively, over 50 percent—more than 80 of them—have gone on to earn PhDs and are now spread across the globe.”

He continued, “We now have alumni in prominent positions throughout Africa and beyond. This has been an incredible success story and a true testament to the University of Jos. It’s something the university can justifiably be proud of.”

“We’ve still got a long way to go, but the recognition they’ve received as a center of excellence is well-deserved. The ability to award PhDs now marks a significant milestone.”
