Presidential candidate and former Governor of Anambra State, Mr. Peter Obi, has paid tribute to the late Arise News journalist, Miss Somtochukwu Maduagwu, whose life was tragically cut short during a robbery incident in Abuja.
In a heartfelt message shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) account on Sunday, Obi revealed that upon returning from the United Kingdom—where he had engaged with several stakeholders, including a meeting with the Commonwealth Secretary-General—he travelled to Agulu to attend Somtochukwu’s burial Mass and interment.

Describing the experience as “deeply painful,” Obi lamented the loss of a young professional whose life symbolized the hope and potential of Nigerian youth.
> “Somtochukwu was a shining example of youthful resourcefulness and dedication,” Obi wrote. “Her passion for truth and commitment to her work reflected the immense possibilities that abound when our young people are given the right environment to thrive.”

He further expressed grief over the pervasive insecurity that continues to claim innocent lives, calling the journalist’s death not just a personal tragedy but a “national loss.”
Obi, who is widely known for his advocacy for youth development and good governance, remembered Somtochukwu for her “warmth, kindness, and gentle spirit,” noting that she left a lasting impact on everyone who knew her.
> “May the gentle soul of Somtochukwu Maduagwu rest peacefully in the bosom of the Lord, and may perpetual light shine upon her,” he concluded.

The incident that led to Somtochukwu’s death has once again highlighted the urgent need for reforms in Nigeria’s security architecture, as calls grow louder for better protection of citizens—especially in the nation’s capital.
Miss Maduagwu is survived by her parents and siblings, to whom Obi extended his deepest condolences, praying for strength and comfort in their time of sorrow.
