Police authorities in Borno State have opened an investigation into the alleged suicide of a young woman in Gubio, following claims that she was forced to marry her father’s friend.
The tragic incident, which reportedly occurred in Gubio Local Government Area, has triggered widespread concern online, prompting the state police command to respond.
In a statement issued Monday in Maiduguri, the Borno State Police Command’s spokesperson, ASP Nahum Kenneth Daso, confirmed that the Commissioner of Police, Naziru Abdulmajid, has ordered a thorough and discreet investigation to uncover the truth behind the claims.
“The Commissioner has directed that the case be discreetly investigated to establish the facts and verify the circumstances surrounding the incident,” Daso said.
He urged members of the public who may have useful, verifiable information to come forward and support the investigation, stressing the importance of accuracy in public discourse.
“We urge everyone to exercise caution and avoid circulating unverified reports, especially on sensitive matters that can trigger public panic or emotional harm,” he warned.
While reassuring the public of the police command’s commitment to protecting human rights and pursuing justice, Daso reminded citizens that spreading false information is a punishable offense under the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act of 2015.
“The command remains focused on safeguarding the rights, dignity, and safety of all residents, and will ensure justice is served based on facts, not speculation,” he added.
As the case continues to unfold, as investigators work to determine whether the allegations hold substance and what led to the young woman’s reported death.
