Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former President Goodluck Jonathan, and Senate President Godswill Akpabio have expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Chief Audu Ogbeh, a former Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development and National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who died on Saturday, August 9, 2025, at his Abuja residence at the age of 78.
The trio’s tributes highlight Ogbeh’s enduring contributions to Nigeria’s political and agricultural landscape, emphasizing his integrity, patriotism, and commitment to national unity.
In a statement issued by his Media Office in Abuja, Atiku described Ogbeh as “a patriot and principled politician” whose death marks a significant loss for Nigeria.
“Chief Ogbeh was a quintessential gentleman, an affable friend, and a reliable ally. His impactful leadership as PDP National Chairman from 2001 to 2005 and his detribalized, development-focused approach combined intellectualism with pragmatism,” Atiku said.
He praised Ogbeh’s role as a linguist, farmer, and steward of the Idoma community, adding, “He was a true defender of liberal democracy, and his kind is rare.”
Atiku extended condolences to Ogbeh’s family, the people of Benue, and Nigerians, praying for comfort and eternal rest for the departed.
Similarly, former President Goodluck Jonathan, in a condolence message released by his Media Adviser, Ikechukwu Eze, mourned Ogbeh as a distinguished public servant whose life was defined by humility and patriotism.
“Chief Ogbeh displayed uncommon intellect and an unwavering commitment to unity, democracy, and national development in his roles as a teacher, minister, and PDP chairman,” Jonathan stated. He lauded Ogbeh’s contributions to agriculture and governance, noting, “His legacy will inspire future generations.”
Jonathan expressed solidarity with Ogbeh’s wife, children, the Otukpo community, and the people of Benue, praying, “May God grant his gentle soul eternal rest and comfort all who mourn him.”
Senate President Godswill Akpabio, in a statement through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Eseme Eyiboh, described Ogbeh as “a distinguished elder statesman and dedicated public servant” whose passing is a profound loss.
“Chief Ogbeh’s life of service, integrity, and commitment to Nigeria’s development, particularly as a two-time minister and PDP chairman, will be long remembered,” Akpabio said.
He highlighted Ogbeh’s intellectual depth, stating, “He was an intellectual storehouse whose legacy testifies to his character.” Akpabio, on behalf of his family, constituents, and the 10th Senate, extended condolences to Ogbeh’s family, friends, the All Progressives Congress (APC), and the people of Benue, praying for strength and divine favor for Ogbeh’s soul.
Ogbeh, a veteran politician, farmer, and playwright, served as Minister of Communications under President Shehu Shagari and as Minister of Agriculture under President Muhammadu Buhari. His multifaceted career and dedication to public service have left an indelible mark on Nigeria, as echoed by the heartfelt tributes from these prominent leaders.
