Bashar communities appeals to Plateau Govt, demands fairness in Rekna’s suspension

By CHRISTIANA LOT, Jos –

In light of the suspension of Alhaji Abdullah Idris Isa, the Rekna of Bashar, by the Plateau State government in the Wase Local Government Area, the Bashar Communities Development Association (BACODA) is urging Governor Barrister Caleb Mutfwang to reconsider this decision for the betterment of the entire Bashar Chiefdom.

The state government mandated Alhaji Isa to step aside on Wednesday, pending a thorough investigation into his selection process, which took place in 2022.

Addressing reporters on Friday, BACODA Chairman Dr. Zakari Mohammed asserted that the selection of Alhaji Abdullah Isa was conducted in accordance with due process and the traditions of the community following the passing of the former Rekna Bashar, Alhaji Adamu Idris.

He further explained that a comprehensive report concerning the selection process was prepared, demonstrating the involvement of all relevant stakeholders. This process, which occurred in 2022, was also documented on video and submitted to the government.

Moreover, Dr. Mohammed emphasized that the report meticulously recorded the names of all nominees, the attendees of the kingmakers, the ballots cast for each candidate, and included recommendations from the Plateau State Council of Chiefs.

Notably, he pointed out that no individual has contested the selection in any court since it was completed in 2022. In addition, Dr. Mohammed noted that momentum for a review began on July 8, 2024, when a group called the “Concerned Stakeholders of Bashar Chiefdom” held a press conference requesting the government to reconsider the selection.

He added, “As laughable as it seemed at first, a counter press conference was held on July 10, 2024, to correct the inaccuracies, misrepresentations, and falsehoods spread during the previous press conference, setting the record straight for both present and future purposes.”

“In the same vein, an interview was granted on Monday, September 30, 2024, following the submission of a memo to the committee recently constituted by the state government to investigate complaints related to the selection of the Rekna of Bashar at the Ministry for Local Governments and Chieftaincy Affairs.”

Dr. Mohammed highlighted that the government’s recent decision has exacerbated tension, discord, and distrust, simultaneously creating a significant leadership void within the chiefdom at a time when strong guidance is critically needed.

On behalf of the community, he urged the government to maintain neutrality amidst alleged claims put forth by certain individuals suggesting government support for the Rekna of Bashar’s position.

“We are concerned that Bashar Chiefdom has been singled out for this treatment, even though there are numerous serious chieftaincy complaints across the state that have not been addressed. We are not aware of any similar directive requiring a chief to step aside during an investigation, as is the case with Bashar Chiefdom.

“This perceived disparity in treatment raises concerns about impartiality, fairness, and justice. We recommend that the state government exercise prudence and ensure consistent application of procedures to avoid any perception of partiality or impropriety.”he said.

Dr. Mohammed concluded by urging Gov. Mutfwang to uphold justice in this matter and adhere to his oath to protect his constituents without bias or undue influence, ensuring that emotions do not cloud his official decisions.
