Bauchi State Governor, Senator Bala Mohammed, has officially flagged off the 2026 rainy season farming campaign, unveiling a major fertilizer subsidy that will see farmers purchase a bag of NPK fertilizer for ₦20,000, significantly below the prevailing market price of ₦38,000.
The launch ceremony took place in Bununu, headquarters of Tafawa Balewa Local Government Area, where the governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening agriculture as a key driver of economic growth and food security in the state.
Addressing farmers and stakeholders at the event, Mohammed described agriculture as the backbone of Bauchi State’s economy, stressing that the fertilizer subsidy is designed to reduce production costs and encourage higher agricultural output.
According to him, the initiative forms part of the government’s broader efforts to improve food security, tackle poverty and enhance the economic wellbeing of residents.
“Adequate quantities of fertilizer and other farm inputs have been procured for distribution across the 20 local government areas, and Bauchi State Agricultural Supply Company (BASAC) is to ensure transparent and equitable sales to end users.”
The governor added that his administration has continued to prioritise the agricultural sector through sustained investments in mechanisation, improved seed varieties, irrigation, agricultural extension services and youth-focused agribusiness programmes aimed at transforming farming from subsistence to commercial production.
Earlier, the Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr. Iliyasu Aliyu Gital, said the ministry would closely monitor the distribution and sale of the subsidised fertilizer to ensure that only genuine farmers benefit from the programme.
Also speaking, the Emir of Bauchi, Dr. Rilwanu Suleiman Adamu, commended the state government for making fertilizer available ahead of the peak of the rainy season, describing the move as timely and beneficial to farmers across the state.
To symbolically launch the fertilizer distribution exercise, Governor Mohammed personally sold bags of the subsidised fertilizer to farmers during the event.
