Member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Blessing Onuh (APC–Benue), has expressed deep concern over the growing wave of killings, kidnappings, and destruction of farmlands in her constituency and other parts of Benue State.
Onuh, who represents the Otukpo–Ohimini Federal Constituency, spoke with journalists on Wednesday in Abuja, describing the situation as alarming and a threat to national stability.
The lawmaker said she was frustrated that despite several motions she had sponsored on the worsening security situation in Benue, meaningful results were yet to be achieved.
> “I am really pained and frustrated; how can I continue to move motions on insecurity without sustained response?” she lamented.
“Yes, sometimes when I cry out, the security agencies will respond, but as soon as they retreat, my people are attacked and gruesomely killed.”
Onuh said the recurring violence had left many families devastated and communities deserted, noting that she had personally spent a large portion of her resources assisting victims.
> “A significant part of my resources goes into medical bills and funeral expenses of victims of the attacks, and these attacks are worsening by the day,” she said.
The lawmaker narrated that most of the attacks often emanate from Otukpo town into surrounding rural communities, leaving behind a trail of destruction.
She appealed to President Bola Tinubu to direct the Service Chiefs and other heads of security agencies to take decisive steps to arrest the perpetrators and restore peace to the affected areas.
> “The killings in my constituency have reached an outrageous level. We witness senseless murder of innocent people on a daily basis, and tragically, it is beginning to feel as though it is normal,” Onuh said.
The federal lawmaker warned that the continued displacement of farmers due to insecurity could worsen food shortages in the state and across the country.
She also urged young people in the affected communities to resist any temptation to engage in reprisal attacks, assuring them that efforts were ongoing to secure federal intervention and lasting peace.
> “I will continue to engage with political leaders and security agencies until peace is restored to my constituency,” she promised.
