Borno Flood Relief Committee completes verification exercise in Maiduguri
By SADIQ ABUBAKAR, Maiduguri –
Borno State Flood Disaster Relief Disbursement Committee has concluded verification in 11 wards affected by the recent flooding that severely impacted Maiduguri Metropolitan, parts of Jere, and Mafa.
The disaster displaced numerous families, damaged homes, and disrupted local infrastructure, with many residents losing their livelihoods.
The wards where verification has been completed include: Gwange I, Gwange II, Gwange III, Maisandari, Lamisula, Limanti, Shehuri North, Shehuri South, Bulabulin, Bolori II (Gonidamgari), and Gamboru.
In response to the extensive damage, Governor Babagana Zulum approved a one-month extension for the Committee on October 23, allowing it additional time to finalize assessments in remaining areas.
Committee Chairman, Engr. Baba Bukar Gujbawu, reported substantial progress. “So far, we have covered 80-90% of our work. We are actively distributing relief to households in one of the affected communities,” Gujbawu said.
However, he expressed concerns over challenges posed by fraudulent activities, revealing cases of token falsification and other forms of misconduct among some claimants.
“In some instances, people move to areas outside their homes to claim allocations that are not theirs. This is one of our major challenges,” he noted.
However, the Committee is set to conduct verification exercise in Tamsu Ngamdua communities, covering Mala Kyariri, Simari, Zannari, Fulatari, and Gwazari.
Committee Steps Up Verification in Jere LGA
As the relief efforts continue, the Flood Disaster Relief Distribution Committee has started verification in Old Maiduguri, a key ward in Jere Local Government Area. Alongside Old Maiduguri, Mashamari and Maimusari remain among the few wards yet to be verified.
The Committee’s Chairman expressed committed to completing the verification process within the extended timeframe.
