Borno State Police Command on Saturday paraded 96 suspects who were arrested between Thursday , 1st August and Saturday, 10th August, 2024 for violence, protests, looting, theft and foreign flag hosting in Maiduguri city and environs.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Yususfu Mohammed Lawal said the command has recorded significant arrest, recovery of exhibits and stolen items during the nationwide protest tagged, “End Bad Governance”.
CP Yususfu Lawal who stated this at a press briefing with journalists at the Crack Office Maiduguri , added that the command while in active collaboration with other security agencies, took proactive measures .
He noted that the measures mitigated the breakdown of law and order intended by the unguided miscreants who took advantage of the protests to carry out their nefarious acts.
Represented by the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO ASP Kenneth Daso, the Commissioner said before the protests, while monitoring the cyber space, Seven (7) Suspects who are social media influencers, were arrested for instigating their social media followers to carry arms and constitute violence across the state and insulting top government officials,. clerics and traditional leaders..
Similarly, during the protest, 7 suspects were found hosting foreign flags which is perceived to jeopardizing the sovereignty of the nation and a threat to National Security.
The CP explained further that 83 suspects were also arrested at various locations within the MMC for vandalizing public and private properties, committing mischief by fire burning tyres and plastics on roads, rioting, and looting of items from stores, shops and roadside.
He said damages recorded include vandalization of WFP warehouse at Baga-road and looting of offices and food items , removal of interlocks, flowers vessels, streetlights and pedestrian bridge barricade at Bulumkutu, Lagos street.
While at Gwange and Baga-road area, there were cases of breaking of vehicle glasses and burning of tires on major routes, vandalizing offices and vehicles at Mechanical village and Looting of items at UNHRC facility Center Baga-road, among others.
CP Lawal said the command remained committed in ensuring public peace and security through high level of professionalism and quality service delivery, members of the public are advice to report any suspicious activities within their domain to the police.
