Borno State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development (MOWASD), in partnership with UN Women, has stepped up efforts to promote inclusive awareness and improve reporting of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) among adolescents and caregivers of persons with disabilities in Maiduguri Metropolitan Council (MMC) and Jere Local Government Area.
The initiative forms part of activities marking the International Women’s Day 2026 celebration, with a focus on strengthening protection mechanisms and ensuring that vulnerable groups—particularly persons living with disabilities—have better access to information and support services for GBV prevention and response.
The event, held on Tuesday in Maiduguri, brought together government officials, development partners, civil society organisations, and community stakeholders to discuss practical strategies for improving inclusive protection systems and safeguarding the rights of women and girls.
This year’s celebration is being observed under the theme “ _Give to Gain,”_ with the sub-theme “ _United Nations: Rights, Justice and Action for All Women and Girls.”_
Participants at the gathering stressed the importance of collective action in advancing gender equality, protecting survivors of violence, and ensuring that women and girls—regardless of their physical condition—can live in dignity and safety.
Speaking at the event, the Commissioner for the Ministry, Zuwaira Gambo, reaffirmed the commitment of the Borno State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development to strengthen policies and programmes that empower women, protect girls, and promote inclusive social development across the state.
She noted that raising awareness about GBV among adolescents and caregivers of persons with disabilities remains critical to ensuring that no one is left behind in the fight against violence and discrimination.
The programme also served as a platform for dialogue, experience sharing, and strengthening partnerships among stakeholders working to advance women’s rights and protection in Borno State.
Participants called for sustained collaboration and stronger community engagement to improve reporting channels and guarantee timely support for survivors of gender-based violence.
The ministry reiterated its commitment to working closely with development partners and community leaders to build a safer and more inclusive environment where women and girls can thrive and contribute meaningfully to the development of the state.
