The Charter President, Inner Wheel Club of Oregun Metro District 912, Mrs Abiola Aberuagba, has called on Governments at all levels to pay more attention to early detection of cancer.

Aberuagba made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) during her induction as the Charter President of the Inner Wheel Club.

Aberuagba said that cancer had been inimical to women productivity in Nigeria and also lowers the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

She said that governments should provide more funds to medical facilities in the country for the early detection and treatments of cancer to its citizens at an affordable cost to deliver med care to the people.

“We at the Inner Wheel Club would do everything within our power to curtail the spread of the deadly disease,” she said.

Aberuagba disclosed that it is a painful situation to see many women being lost to the deadly cancer as a result of stigmatization, late detection and lack of fund to care for the victims.

She called on women to shun the fear of stigmatisation and come out for early cancer screening which could save more lives and help the economy to grow.

Earlier in her speech, Aberuagba said that the clubs membership was open to benevolent women with a view to reaching out to the less-privileged women and girls.

“The Theme for the year 2021 to 2022 is “Pink First there are four areas of attention namely: Health, Education, Opportunity and Empowerment.

“These are: distribution of school uniform and sandals to 50 children in primary school, sinking of three boreholes and handwashing to station I primary schools. Others are the signage at the Children Emergency Building in Lagos State Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), distribution of food items to orphanage homes.

“Construction of six toilet facilities in primary school, free medical screening such as Cervical Cancer Screening, Mammogram Screening, Hepatitis B among others, she said.

The National Representative, Inner Wheel Club, Mrs Monisola Bamisaiye, in her address called for more women emancipation and positive influence in the society.

“We need to build up women so that we can build a better world. When women are in control of an organisation, the impact is felt positively.

“Examples are Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the Director General of World Trade Organisation (WTO), late Prof Dora Akunyili, who turned NAFDAC around, Ms Angela Merkel, the first female Chancellor of Germany, and others.

“If we can build up the strength of women, then we can build up a better world, with our project “Pink Comes First women comes first and the world will be a better place,” she said.
