Suspended CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele.

By EZEKIEL OBI, Abuja –

The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr. Godwin Emefiele has resumed duty at the apex bank’s headquarters in Abuja on Monday after spending his annual leave abroad.

Mr. Emefiele had been out of the country since December, 2022, amidst certain accusations by the Department of State Services (DSS).

According to a statement by Osita Nwanisobi, CBN’s Director, Corporate Communications, Emefiele resumed with renewed vigour to perform his duty ahead of the forthcoming Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting.

“The governor resumed with renewed vigour to perform his duty ahead of the first MPC meeting to perform his duty ahead of the forthcoming Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting scheduled for Jan. 23 and Jan. 24.

“He remains committed to performing the task before him, in line with his oath of office and the policy direction of President Muhammadu Buhari.

“While thanking the public for keeping faith with the CBN, we urge Nigerians to continue to support policies of the CBN aimed at ensuring a stable financial system and the Nigerian economy in general, ‘” he said.

It would be recalled that the DSS on Monday evening has debunked reports making the rounds, that its operatives invaded CBN Headquarters and arrested Emefiele on Monday afternoon.

The DSS spokesman, Dr Peter Afunanya, who debunked the report in a statement issued on Monday in Abuja, described the report as fake and misleading.

He said: “The attention of the Department of State Services (DSS) has been drawn to the false news making the round that its operatives invaded the Central Bank of Nigeria and arrested its Governor, today 16/1/23.

“This is fake news and quite misleading”, the DSS spokesman said.

The embattled CBN governor has been having a running battle with DSS over alleged terrorism financing.

DSS had earlier sought a court order to arrest Emefiele who has been out of the country for his annual leave. However, the FCT High Court had in December 2022 barred the secret service from arresting, inviting, or detaining Emefiele.
