The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, has called on the Regiment Sergeant Majors (RSMs) to be good examples to other soldiers in their units and formations.
Oluyede said this during the closing of the first RSMs Convention for 2025, on Thursday in Jos.
He described the RSMs as a bridge between the soldiers and the officers towards the success of all its operations.
“Let me start by making you realise the importance of the RSMs to us in the army; the RSMs actually stand as a buffer between the officers and the soldiers.
“I call them the fathers of our units. They take instructions from the officers to the soldiers.
“We expect them to live in such a manner that the younger ones will learn from them in terms of regimentation and discipline.
“So, in essence, they are the embodiment of discipline in the Nigerian army,” he said.
The COAS said that the convention was organised to further equip the participants to be more effective and efficient in the discharge of their duties.
“We are here to appraise what they are doing and how they can contribute more to making us more effective operationally.
“And I believe this convention has done that.
“I came here specifically to motivate them more, as our fathers, to do more so that we can have our soldiers discharge their duties more responsibly and professionally.
“For our soldiers to behave better in society and discharge their duties well, the RSMs have a big role to play,” he said.
The COAS promised to make the welfare of soldiers and their families among his top priorities, insisting that such a move would promote optimal performance in the army. (NAN)
