
National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has reported an increase in the average price of cooking gas in Nigeria.
According to the NBS’s “Cooking Gas Price Watch” for May 2025, the average price of a 5kg cooking gas cylinder rose to N8,167.43, representing a 3.57% increase from N7,885.60 in April.
The NBS noted that the average price of 5kg of cooking gas increased by 10.10% on a year-on-year basis from N7,418.45 in May 2024 to N8,167.43 in May 2025.
The report revealed significant variations in cooking gas prices across states. Abia State recorded the highest average price at N9,181.20, while Oyo State recorded the lowest at N7,116.49. Other states with high prices include Ebonyi (N9,177.32) and Rivers (N9,174.40).
The South-South zone recorded the highest average retail price at N8,760.51 for 5kg of cooking gas, followed by the South-East at N8,724.70. The North-Central zone recorded the lowest average retail price at N7,759.38.
The average retail price for refilling a 12.5kg cooking gas cylinder increased by 2.18% month-on-month to N20,709.11 in May 2025. The price rose by 32.52% year-on-year from N15,627.40 in May 2024 to N20,709.11 in May 2025.
Delta State recorded the highest average retail price of N23,356.46, while Yobe State recorded the lowest at N18,500. The South-South zone recorded the highest average retail price of N22,026.26, followed by the South-East at N21,811.76.
