EFCC arraigns former Abubakar Malami, wife and son in court
Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has granted bail in the sum of ₦500 million to former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, alongside two other defendants.
Justice Emeka Nwite, who delivered the ruling, ordered that the bail must be secured with two sureties, each of whom must own landed property in Asokoro, Maitama or Gwarinpa within the Federal Capital Territory.
The court further directed that the title documents of the properties be submitted and verified by the Deputy Chief Registrar of the court, while the sureties are also required to depose to affidavits of means.
Justice Nwite added that both Malami and his sureties must deposit their travel documents with the court. The former Attorney General was specifically barred from travelling out of the country without the court’s permission.
In addition, the court ordered Malami and his sureties to submit two recent passport photographs each as part of the bail conditions.
Pending the fulfilment of these conditions, the judge ordered that Malami be remanded at the Kuje Correctional Centre.
Justice Nwite subsequently fixed February 17 for the commencement of trial in the matter.
The court extended the same bail terms to Malami’s son, Abdulaziz Malami, and Hajia Asabe Bashir, an employee of Rahamaniyya Properties Limited.
The trio is standing trial following a 16-count charge of alleged money laundering filed against them by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
