Cristiano Ronaldo has provided more clarity on his recent retirement comments, confirming that he plans to step away from football within the next “one or two years.”
The legendary Portuguese forward, who has netted over 950 goals for both club and country, initially sparked speculation about his future during a recent interview.
Ronaldo, now playing for Saudi Arabian side Al-Nassr, had previously hinted at retirement to focus more on family life, but clarified that the end is not immediate. He stated, “Soon for me means in 10 years… No, I’m joking,” during a virtual appearance at a global summit on tourism and investment in Saudi Arabia.
Despite being in the later stages of his career, Ronaldo feels sharp and in great form. “I’m really enjoying the moment right now,” he said, adding that he’s still scoring goals and feels fast on the pitch. However, at 40 years old, he acknowledged that footballers are always aware of their age, and retirement is on the horizon.
Ronaldo also confirmed that the 2026 World Cup will likely be his final appearance at football’s biggest stage. “Definitely, yes, because I will be 41 years old,” he remarked, reflecting on his extraordinary 25-year career in football, with numerous records at club and international levels, including being the top scorer in international football with 143 goals.
Looking to the future, Ronaldo also shared his hopes for his son, Cristiano Jr., who is following in his father’s footsteps by playing for Portugal’s Under-16 team. While the elder Ronaldo hopes his son surpasses him, he emphasized that his primary goal is for him to be happy, without the weight of expectation. “I’m here to help him be whatever he wants to be,” he said, offering unwavering support.
As Ronaldo moves towards the final phase of his playing career, his legacy as one of football’s greatest players is undeniable. Now, with his sights set on the 2026 World Cup, it’s clear that Ronaldo intends to leave the pitch on his own terms.
