Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has officially endorsed Umar Damagum as its National Chairman.
The decision was finalized during the 102nd National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting at the party’s Abuja headquarters, set to steer the party through its upcoming national convention in November.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the NEC’s resolution confirmed Damagum’s leadership role until the elective convention, scheduled for November 15-16 in Ibadan, Oyo State.
During the meeting, Kamaldeen Ajibade, the PDP’s National Legal Adviser, administered the oath of office to Damagum, as stipulated in Article 65 of the party’s constitution.
Expressing his gratitude, Damagum remarked, “This gesture is not just for me, but for the entire National Working Committee (NWC). I owe it to them.”
He reflected on the challenges faced since assuming the acting chairmanship, stating, “We came in at a time when things were very hard, but to the glory of God, we are still intact as one indivisible party.”
Damagum’s journey to the chairmanship began on March 28, 2023, when he stepped into the acting role following a Benue State High Court ruling that ousted former Chairman Dr. Iyorchia Ayu. Debo Ologunagba, PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, announced the transition, referencing Section 45 (2) of the PDP Constitution (as amended in 2017).
Before this, Damagum served as the Deputy National Chairman (North).
With the convention approaching, Damagum’s confirmation signals the PDP’s commitment to unified leadership as it prepares for a pivotal moment in its political journey. (NAN)
