The Federal Government, through the National Sports Commission, has approved a major nationwide sports infrastructure revamp aimed at repositioning Nigerian sports and restoring key facilities to international standards.
The projects include the complete rehabilitation and upgrade of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja, upgrades to tracks, floodlights, media and athlete facilities, construction of a High Performance Centre, anti-doping laboratory, training pitches, redevelopment and development of the 200 room athletes’ hostel into a proper hotel.
Others include VAR installation, upgrades to medical facilities including new medical equipments, development of a sports center to provide additional offices and spaces for all the sports federations etc and rehabilitation of critical sports infrastructure across the country.
The initiative according to the commission also extended to direct support for states hosting future National Sports Festivals and development of other elite sports infrastructure across the country, the construction of mini sports centres nationwide, and the establishment of sports facilities across some tertiary institutions in furtherance of the of development of sports centres of excellence across tertiary institutions as part of efforts to strengthen grassroots and school sports development.
The NSC said the unprecedented investments which is the first phase align with the Renewed Hope Agenda and shared prosperity vission of President Bola Tinubu and are designed to position sports as a driver of youth empowerment, economic growth, talent development, and national unity.
