FG hands over 186,000 recovery needs items for IDPs in Borno

The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Hajiya Sadiya Farouq has said her ministry would continue to support and cushion the hardship of the people of Borno State particularly the IDPs who have been affected by the 13 years of Boko Haram insurgency.

Hajiya Farouq also commended the people of Borno State for the resilience built over time that have made them to subdued the insurgency while praying for Gods Mercy never such harrowing experience to repeat itself.

The minister gave the commendation on Wednesday in Maiduguri while handing over of recovery needs items for IDPs in the state.

“Let me appreciate Your Excellency for providing the good working relationship and partnership between Borno State and the Federal Government (particularly the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, FMHADMSD and her Agencies).

“This goes to show the importance Your Excellency has attached to ending the plight of these unfortunate victims (especially the women and children) of the insurgency. I can assure you that President Muhammadu Buhari is solidly in support of bringing this insurgency to an end and returning the victims back to their lives in dignity.

“This desire is apparent in many projects and programs that are on-going for that purpose. One of such projects is Mr President’s approval for the purchase of Humanitarian Recovery Needs for the Internally Displaced Person’s (IDPs) in Borno State which was provided through the FMHADMSD in 2019 as a Federal Government Special Intervention Fund to purchase relief items for the returned refugees from Camerron, Chad & Niger that have been accommodated in twelve (12) camps namely Monguno, Bakassi, Dalori 1, Muna, Bama, Ngala, Dikwa, Gwoza, Pulka, Damboa, Banki, and Mafa camps in Maiduguri , Borno State,” Sadiya said

The Minister, who was represented by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, said the total number of non food relief items being handed over to the IDPs included – 75,600 pieces of clothing material for women, 72,000 pieces of clothing material for Men, 19,200 number of blankets and 19,200 number of polythene mats.

She explained further that the Federal Government through her ministry has taken note of this year’s prediction and is working with stakeholders to mitigate the possible effect of such flooding.

Receiving the relief materials , the Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum thanked the Federal Government for their continuous support to the people and Government of Borno State.

He also assured his government commitment to resettle IDPs to their ancestral homes and provide them with livelihoods support among others towards making them self reliant and independent.

Zulum, who was represented by his deputy, Hon. Umar Kadafur, assured the judicious and even distribution of the items to the target groups.

Tge governor noted that his administration has made concerted efforts towards repatriating some refugees from the Republics of Chad, Niger and Cameroon.

Earlier, the Director General, Borno State Emergency Agency (SEMA), Hajiya Yabawa Kolo thanked both the federal and state governments as well as the ministry for their support and cooperation while assuring prudent sharing of the relief items to the IDPs in the state.
