Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Zaccheus Adedeji, has emphasized the crucial role of the media in promoting voluntary tax compliance among Nigerians.
Adedeji, who was represented by the Technical Assistance on Broadcast Media, Arabinrin Aderonke, made this known while delivering his opening remarks at a sensitization programme in kaduna with the themed: “The Role of Media in Voluntary Tax Compliance.”
He noted that taxation remains the backbone of national development, stressing that hospitals, roads, and essential social services are made possible through taxpayers’ contributions.
“Taxes are not just government revenue; they are the foundation of growth in our nation.
“However, many people still view taxation as a burden or punishment. What we need is a culture of voluntary compliance, where citizens willingly fulfill their civic duty because they understand the benefits and trust that their contributions will be used for the common good” he said.
Adedeji underscored the media’s strategic role as a messenger, educator, and watchdog, stating that journalists and broadcasters are well-positioned to simplify complex tax laws, enlighten the public, and foster trust between citizens and government.
According to him, “Through stories, interviews, documentaries, and reports, the media helps people connect the dots between the taxes they pay and the services they receive. Investigative journalism, though often challenging, is essential because it exposes mismanagement and builds public confidence in the system.”
He added that media platforms, traditional and digital, create vital spaces for dialogue, enabling citizens to voice their concerns and receive clarity on tax issues.
The FIRS boss stressed the need for sustained partnership between tax authorities and the media, founded on transparency, professionalism, and collaboration.
He urged media practitioners to embrace their roles not only as reporters but also as educators, influencers, and watchdogs in the national interest.
“Paying taxes is part of building our nation. It is how each of us contributes to the progress we want to see. The media has a special role in ensuring that this contribution is understood, valued, and embraced by all,” Adedeji said.
He expressed optimism that the sensitization programme would deepen collaboration between FIRS and the media while inspiring new ideas to boost tax awareness and compliance.
