Ghanaian President John Mahama has unveiled plans for a special education fund to support the children of the eight victims of the tragic military helicopter crash that occurred on August 6, 2025.
The announcement came during the funeral proceedings for Alhaji Mohammed Muniru Limuna, the late Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator.
State Support for the Bereaved
Acknowledging the devastating impact of the crash, particularly on families with young children, including the infant of a pilot, President Mahama underscored the importance of ensuring the well-being of the affected families. He committed to establishing a fund to alleviate financial burdens and promote the educational advancement of the children.
Details of the Education Fund
Mahama stated, “On Friday, August 15, we will hold a state funeral, where we will outline initiatives to create a fund for the children’s education. I will provide further details then, allowing those who wish to contribute to the future of these children to do so. May Allah grant him mercy, forgive his shortcomings, and accept him.”
Commemorating the Deceased
The Ghana Air Force Harbin Z-9 helicopter crashed while traveling to Obuasi for the launch of the Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme (rCOMSDEP). The victims included prominent figures such as Defence Minister Edward Omane Boamah, Environment Minister Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, and three crew members, among others. The incident, which took place in the Ashanti region, is considered one of Ghana’s worst aviation disasters in recent years.
The tragedy has sparked widespread condolences from political leaders, civil society, and the public, who have expressed solidarity with former President Mahama and the affected families.
Other victims included Dr Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and former Ashanti Regional Minister, Samuel Aboagye, a former NDC Parliamentary Candidate for Obuasi East, Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Malin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation, with the recovered black box expected to provide critical insights. President Mahama declared three days of national mourning, ordered flags to be flown at half-mast, and scheduled a state funeral for August 15, 2025, at Black Star Square.
