The widespread presence of social vices amongst young people across the country demands a collective response from parents, religious organizations, government agencies, and other stakeholders.
Brigadier General AGL Haruna, Commander of Sector I, JTF Operation Hadin Kai North East Theater Command and GOC 7 Division, Nigerian Army, Maimamalari Cantonment Maiduguri, emphasized this point on Tuesday while inaugurating a two-day Scrabble Clinic Event for youths at Maimamalari Barracks.
General Haruna said the rising trend of social vices amongst youths can be attributed, in part, to a lack of engagement in activities that challenge their minds and promote productive contributions to society.
“This ugly trend is partly traceable to inadequate engagement of youths in activities that is capable of tasking their brain for productive contributions in the society”, he said.
To address this, the Scrabble Clinic was organized to provide a valuable learning experience for young people during the current long vacation.
Scrabble, General Haruna noted, is an educational game that teaches players of all ages to focus on the process, rather than the outcome. It requires a consistent approach, a positive attitude, and diverse skills, including mathematics and probability. By practicing Scrabble, young people can develop these skills and avoid negative influences that may lead them astray.
General Haruna encouraged the youths to continue learning, studying, and practicing with the Scrabble boards, which will be made available at their youth center after the event. He declared the Scrabble Clinic open, emphasizing the importance of collective efforts in addressing the prevalence of social vices amongst youths.
