Gov. Zulum identifies root causes of Boko Haram insurgency in Nigeria

The Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Zulum has identified abject poverty, high inequality, environmental degradation, illiteracy as some of the root causes of Boko Haram insurgency bedeviling the country.

The Governor stated this during the weekend while signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the establishment of a sugar factory in Toto LGA of Nasarawa State between the Nasarawa State Government and Flour Mills Nigeria.

Governor Zulum , who advised that the larger size of the factory workforce should be the indigenes of Nasarawa state, also noted that the establishment of the factory would go a long way in creating job opportunities for the indiegenes of the state and further influence economic growth to support the state and the country at large.

He said: “I am therefore advising Governor Sule to establish strong institutional arrangements that would ensure the sustainability of the agreement.”

“Many at times in Nigeria, programmes do not last long due to poor institutional arrangements for implementation”.

“It is my sincere prayer that the Flour Mills Nigeria will take into consideration the plight of the indigenes of Nasarawa state, first in terms of local content development and recruitment,” Zulum said.

Prof. Zulum further explained that the plight of the indigenes of Nasarawa state was key to guaranteeing security and smooth operations of the factory in the state.

He, however, cautioned that under no circumstances should the state government allow Flour Mills Nigeria recruit workforce contrary to the terms of agreement signed, stressing that the factory’s failure to partner with the indigenes could ignite industrial strike and security challenges that prevail in other parts of the country.

Governor Zulum also revealed that Borno State Government would also partner with the Flour Mills Nigeria on an investment opportunity for the overall development of the state.
