Cross River State Governor, Bassey Otu has granted scholarship to the children of a staunch loyalist of his, Prince Offiong Effiwatt, who died on December 25, 2023.

The Governor announced the scholarship award during a surprise condolence visit to the family home of the deceased in Bay Side, Calabar South on Tuesday.

Speaking with the wife, children and parents of the late Offiong, Governor Otu said the deceased was a friend and staunch loyalist of many years, and dying at a relatively young age was saddening and a great loss to his family, community and state in general.

“This death, like every other one, especially for someone who is relatively young is saddening. While death is inevitable, and all of us will sooner or later go the way of all mortals, Offiong was a young man who was contributing very much to his community.

“I am here today to assure his wife, Jumoke, the children and the family that Offiong will be sorely missed and I have undertaken to place the children on scholarship,” the Governor said.

Governor Otu in the condolence register, wrote; “Very, very sad moment for all of us friends of yours. We are going to miss you dearly. We love you, but God loves you more.
“May your gentle soul rest in perfect peace.”

The late Offiong was a staff of the University of Calabar and politician.
