Osun State Commander of the Amotekun Corps, Mr. Adekunle Omoyele, narrowly escaped an assassination attempt after being ambushed by gunmen in Osogbo late Monday night.
According to a statement released by the corps’ spokesperson, Mr. Abass Yusuf, the attack took place around 10:05 p.m. along Ikirun Road, near Charity Hotel, as the commander was driving home alone after work.
“Gunmen suddenly opened fire on him, riddling his vehicle with bullets,” Yusuf revealed in the statement, which was made available to journalists on Tuesday.
He described the attack as “deeply troubling,” adding:
> “It is deeply troubling that the Amotekun commander could be targeted in such a coordinated and vicious manner.”
Yusuf further disclosed that earlier the same day, 15 armed men, all masked, stormed Omoyele’s private residence. Eyewitnesses reported that the attackers arrived in a Hilux van and a Toyota Highlander SUV, suggesting a well-planned operation.
The incident has raised alarms over the safety of security officials tasked with protecting the public.
> “The attack is not just an attack on one man but on the symbol of our localised security structure,” Yusuf said, calling it a disturbing signal of growing insecurity.
He also urged residents to stay vigilant and report any suspicious movements to the nearest security agency for swift action.
Omoyele sustained gunshot wounds during the attack and is currently receiving treatment at an undisclosed medical facility under tight security.
The matter has since been reported to the Ota-Efun Police Division, and an official investigation is underway.
