The Defence Headquarters has confirmed the arrest of a Chinese national during a counter-terrorism operation in Borno and Yobe states.
The suspect, who claimed to be a miner, was apprehended by troops of Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK) in Kukawa and Ngala Local Government Areas of Borno.
Director of Defence Media Operations, Maj.-Gen. Markus Kangye, revealed that the Chinese national is undergoing interrogation to determine the motive behind his presence in the region and his involvement in illegal activities.
“The Chinese national has been detained and he is undergoing interrogation,” Kangye said.
Kangye promised that the public would be furnished with more details after a thorough investigation.
“When the interrogation is completed, we will be able to furnish the public with the details of why he was there in the first place, how he was arrested, whether he was the only one there, or he had accomplices,” he added.
The arrest is part of the military’s ongoing efforts to address security challenges in the region.
He said scores of Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists, including adult males and females, as well as children, have surrendered between June 6 and June 11, due to heightened operational tempo.
The DHQ said the military remains committed to protecting lives and property, upholding the rule of law, and fostering a safe and secure environment for all Nigerians.
“We remain dedicated to transparency and will keep the public informed of our ongoing efforts to ensure the stability and security of our great nation,” Kangye reaffirmed.
