Nigerian singer, Peter Okoye popularly known as Mr P
Popular Nigerian singer, Peter Okoye (Mr P) has stirred reactions online after saying he has already done his part in speaking up about Nigeria’s issues and now wants to focus on his personal life.
In a post on his verified X handle on Monday, the singer reflected on his involvement during the End SARS protests and the last general elections.
“I’ve already played my part from the last election to the End SARS movement.
“At this point, I’m choosing to focus on my life and my family. Everyone has their own role to play,” he wrote.
Mr P was one of the entertainers who spoke up during the 2020 End SARS protests, using his platform to call out police brutality.
His recent comment has drawn mixed reactions online.
Some fans defended him.
@FemiObaf wrote:
“@PeterPsquare has contributed his own quota. I recall all the backlash he had to endure. And all for what? Ungrateful people who will queue up to collect rice and spaghetti and still vote APC and mortgage their conscience.”
Others were less forgiving. @EboEmakhu argued that public figures should continue speaking out:
“Focusing on your life and family in a country that’s currently chaotic, as an influential voice, is very selfish. If you and your craft weren’t blessed with listening support from the same people you now believe you’re above to join voices with to demand a better Nigeria, regardless if you’ve done it before, do you think you will not be concerned? Delete this rubbish.”
Mr P hasn’t responded further to the reactions since posting.
