Senate President, Godswill Akpabio and Senator Natasha Akpoti
Rep. Clement Jimbo has called for greater judicial clarity in the ongoing legal dispute between Senate leadership and suspended Sen. Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
He emphasized the need for court judgments to be simple, clear, and unambiguous, warning that unclear judgments can sow confusion and undermine the rule of law.
Akpoti-Uduaghan was suspended for six months in March for allegedly breaking Senate rules.
However, she challenged her suspension in court, and a recent judgment has sparked debate over its interpretation.
The Senate has maintained that there is no court order mandating Akpoti-Uduaghan’s recall before the expiration of her suspension.
Jimbo’s concerns

Jimbo in a motion on personal explanation raised during plenary on Tuesday at the National Assembly, expressed concerns over the increasing trend of court judgments being delivered with ambiguities, subject to different interpretations.
He stressed that the judiciary’s credibility is at stake if judgments lack clarity, particularly in politically sensitive cases.
He called for a recalibration of the template used for writing and delivering court judgments to ensure clarity and convey the intentions of judges.
Jimbo’s motion highlights the need for judicial clarity and consistency in the delivery of judgments.
As the legal impasse continues, it remains to be seen how the judiciary will respond to the call for greater clarity and transparency.
