Seven farmers abducted from their farmland in Itaogbolu, Ondo State, have regained freedom after spending five days in captivity.
The gunmen launched a surprise attack on the farmers while they were working on their farms in Akure North Local Government Area.
A relative of one of the abductees revealed that the farmers were released on Wednesday night after their families paid a N5 million ransom and provided food items.
The kidnappers initially demanded N100 million, which was later reduced to N20 million. However, the families could only raise N5 million, leading to the release of the farmers in Ikere-Ekiti, Ekiti State.
The relative expressed gratitude that the ordeal had finally come to an end, saying, “I’m happy to tell you that the kidnappers released all seven farmers on Wednesday night. They are back with their families.”
Following their release, the farmers were rushed to the hospital for medical attention due to the harsh conditions they endured during their captivity.
The incident highlights the growing security concerns in the region and the need for effective measures to prevent such abductions.
Efforts to reach the state Commander of Amotekun Corps and the Police Public Relations Officer were unsuccessful, with the latter stating, “I’m not aware of their release.” Despite the challenges in getting official confirmation, the families are relieved that their loved ones are safe and receiving the necessary care.
