Crime suspect in police handcuff
By OLA MODUPE, Lagos-
Lagos State Police Command has apprehended three suspected members of a notorious “one-chance” robbery syndicate operating in Ikeja, recovering their operational vehicle and several incriminating items.
The arrests were confirmed by CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, the command’s spokesperson, in a statement issued on Monday in Lagos.
Hundeyin revealed that officers from the Ikeja Division acted swiftly after a distress call was received during a routine patrol along Agege Motor Road.
“Following a victim’s alarm, we intercepted a 53-year-old notorious kingpin and two accomplices, aged 20 and 22, inside an unregistered minibus used for their crimes,” he stated.
The older suspect was identified as a wanted leader linked to multiple violent “one-chance” robberies across Lagos.
Items recovered included a Tecno Spark 20 smartphone stolen from a victim, an axe, two concrete interlocking bricks, several heavy stones believed to have been used in assaults, and a broken bottle, all registered as exhibits.
“These items were tools of their trade, used to intimidate and harm victims,” Hundeyin noted.
Investigations uncovered the gang’s modus operandi: using commercial minibuses, known as “Korope,” the suspects posed as passengers to lure unsuspecting commuters, particularly from busy areas like Oshodi. Victims were then diverted to remote locations, where they were robbed through threats and violence.
“This syndicate has been terrorizing commuters, but this arrest marks a significant breakthrough,” Hundeyin added.
The case has been handed over to the Command’s Special Squad I to pursue other fleeing members and dismantle the criminal network. Commissioner of Police Olohundare Jimoh praised the officers’ quick response, stating, “Their prompt action has disrupted a dangerous gang and brought a wanted kingpin to justice.”
He urged residents to avoid unmarked vehicles and report suspicious activities to the police via emergency lines 08063299264 and 09168631003, emphasizing vigilance to enhance community safety.
