A relentless downpour from Saturday night into Sunday morning has left approximately 70 homes in Malam Madori Local Government Area of Jigawa State in ruins, according to local authorities.
The devastation was confirmed by Alhaji Musa Muhammad, the council’s Information Officer, in a statement released to journalists in Dutse on Monday.
The heavy rainfall, which persisted for hours, caused widespread flooding that overwhelmed waterways and culverts, damaging homes in areas such as Shagari Quarters, Tonikutara, Gandun Sarki, and Gandun Bundugoma.
“The prolonged deluge led to significant destruction, with floodwaters breaching local infrastructure,” Muhammad explained.
A resident of Gandun Sarki, Umar Abba, described the personal toll, noting, “My house was among over 30 buildings completely washed away.”
He urgently appealed to the Jigawa State Government for immediate assistance to support affected families.
A local titleholder, Bulama Jamilu, added that many displaced residents are now seeking shelter with relatives.
In response, Malam Madori Council Chairman Alhaji Salisu Sani expressed heartfelt sympathy and committed to providing relief.
“We are mobilizing support for the victims,” Sani assured, directing the Local Emergency Management Committee (LEMC) to evaluate the damage.
LEMC Chairperson Hajiya Amina Haruna reported that Hamza Adamu, the state lawmaker for Malam Madori, donated truckloads of sand and other aid, while the council supplied a water pump engine to drain floodwater from Gandun Sarki to nearby rural areas.
Additionally, Hamza Muhammad, Senior Special Adviser to Governor Umar Namadi on Community Affairs and Inclusion, led an assessment team and vowed to implement measures to prevent future flooding.
“We are committed to swift action to protect our communities,” he pledged. (NAN)
