By SADIQ ABUBAKAR, Maiduguri –
Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum has expressed his dismay over lack of electricity and other facilities at the General Hospital Gwoza.
The governor could not hide his feelings when he paid a surprise visit to the hospital at midnight on Saturday.
Zulum who was on a one-day working visit to Gwoza town also spent the night in Gwoza town which is the headquarter of Gwoza Local Government Area of the state as part of his surprise visits to hospitals at odd hours and day time to schools during class hours in a bid to assess situations on ground.
During his visit on Saturday, the governor went round Gwoza general hospital to assess functionality of the hospital where he inspected all the wards and facilities at the hospital, expressing his disappointment with what he saw.
“It is unacceptable that a critical healthcare facility like this Gwoza General Hospital is deprived of basic amenities such as electricity. This situation compromises the quality of care provided to patients and hampers the efforts of our dedicated healthcare professionals.
” We are not here to trade blame, we are here to find solutions. Nobody brought to my knowledge the deplorable conditions of this place”, Zulum said in anger.
“I will neither exonerate myself nor the local government authority. We (all) have failed to provide what is needed. However, I want to assure you (patients and the rest of the people) that insha’Allah, we will fix this, we will make the working environment here better than it is now,” Zulum said.
The governor further ordered for the immediate commencement of rehabilitation work at the hospital to include restoration electricity at the General Hospital.
However, Zulum was impressed with the medical staff for their dedication and commitment to service to patients day and night without much facilities on ground to provide the needed services.
He announced reward for all the staff on duty for their hard work and dedication in spite of the lingering challenges that they face at the hospital.
