Minimum Wage Update: FG makes new offer of N62,000
By JACOB KUBEKA, Abuja –
The Federal Government has made a fresh offer N62,000 as minimum wage for its workers.
This development came after several hours of meeting on Friday.
The new offer represents and increase of N2,00 from the N60,000 offered by the government earlier in the day.
Despite this, the organised labour is proposing a N250,000 which is a shift from its earlier N494,000, according to Channels TV.
The Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), had earlier complained about the N60,000 minimum wage proposal, describing the amount as not sustainable
In a statement issued in Abuja by its acting Director of Media and Public Affairs, Hajiya Halima Ahmed, the NGF cautioned parties in the minimum wage discussion, asking them to “look beyond just signing a document for the sake of it; any agreement to be signed should be sustainable and realistic.”
The statement further said: “All things considered, the NGF holds that the N60,000 minimum wage proposal is not sustainable and cannot fly.
“It will simply mean that many states will spend all their Federal Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) allocations on just paying salaries, with nothing left for development purposes.
“In fact, a few states will end up borrowing to pay workers every month. We do not think this will be in the collective interest of the country, including workers,’’
