More voices plead for Aminu’s pardon

AUSTIN FAIR, Lagos

As the final countdown begins for Kano musician, Sharif Aminu to either appeal for his death sentence over blasphemy or face execution, more Nigerians and foreigners are begging for his clemency.

Copyright Society of Nigeria (COSON) Chairman and ex-PMAN President, Chief Tony Okoroji devoted part of his No Music Day speech to the helpless young man accused of blasphemy, to beg for his pardon.

He said, ‘’ as we mark this day, we humbly appeal for the pardon of Yaya Sharif Aminu who was recently sentenced to death in Kano.

‘We wish to state that as an organization representing the interest of Nigerian musicians and others in the music industry, we make our appeal to the Kano State government for the pardon of Aminu based on compassionate ground. We also hope that other organizations will join us in pleading that the life of this young Nigerian is spared.’’

Already many humanitarian organizations have called for his forgiveness at one time or the other.
Contributing, Dr Mark Anderson, a UK-based showbiz consultant, also pleaded with the Kano State government to temper justice and safe his life.

It would be recalled that Sharif was arrested in March after protesters pounced on his home and led a procession to the Kano Hisbah command’s headquarters demanding for his arrest and prosecution and he was eventually arrested, prosecuted and sentenced.
