National Assembly has announced plans to hold a comprehensive national security summit to address the escalating insecurity that is jeopardizing lives, property, and agricultural productivity across Nigeria.
Speaking at a Stakeholders’ Consultative Meeting on the 2026 Agriculture Budget in Lagos on Wednesday, Senator Garba Maidoki, a key member of the Senate Committee on Agricultural Production and Rural Development, highlighted the urgent need to tackle insecurity to protect food production and rural livelihoods.
The meeting, organized by ActionAid Nigeria (AAN), German International Cooperation (GIZ), and the Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning, among others, focused on aligning agricultural frameworks with national and continental goals.
“The rising wave of insecurity is a direct threat to our food systems and the livelihoods of millions,” Senator Maidoki said. “Without decisive action, we risk deepening food insecurity and undermining sustainable development.”
The consultative forum provided a platform to discuss critical agricultural policies, including the National Agricultural Technology and Innovation Policy and the National Agricultural Development Fund, and their alignment with the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP) targets. These frameworks aim to advance innovation, financing, and technology adoption in agriculture.
The upcoming security summit, set to take place in Lagos in the coming months, will bring together security agencies, policymakers, and citizens to craft a new security framework. “This summit will be a game-changer,” Maidoki stated.
“We will hold public hearings across all zones, with Lagos as a key hub, to gather input from Nigerians. These contributions will shape a security blueprint that our security chiefs will implement to restore peace and protect our farmlands.”
Maidoki emphasized that insecurity has caused widespread displacement, destruction of farmlands, and a surge in food insecurity, making the summit a critical step toward sustainable solutions. “Nigerians deserve to live in peace and have access to food and opportunities,” he added.
“This summit will ensure their voices are heard and their solutions are acted upon.”
The Stakeholders’ Consultative Meeting also aimed to enhance citizen participation in shaping the 2026 Agriculture Budget to bolster food systems and wealth creation.
Additionally, it supported Nigeria’s commitments under the Kampala Declaration by facilitating effective biennial reporting to the African Union Heads of State and Government.
