Illicit arms to be destroyed
National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (NCCSALW) demolished 1,316 illegal firearms in Abuja on Thursday, marking a significant step in Nigeria’s fight against arms proliferation.
During the event, Director-General of NCCSALW, retired DIG Johnson Kokumo, emphasized the importance of the initiative, stating, “This is the fifth exercise in our ongoing efforts to eliminate illicit weapons, with over 13,230 arms destroyed in four years.”
He highlighted that the destruction aligns with Nigeria’s obligations under international agreements, noting, “This exercise reflects our commitment to Article 17 of the ECOWAS Convention on Small Arms and Light Weapons and the United Nations Programme of Action.”
Kokumo underscored the transparency of the process, saying, “We are not just destroying weapons; we are ensuring they never re-enter circulation.”
He also acknowledged regional cooperation, adding, “Our partnerships with Chad and Cameroon are yielding results in curbing cross-border arms trafficking.”
Expressing appreciation for security forces, Kokumo remarked, “The support of the Chief of Army Staff, particularly in providing storage and venues, has been crucial to this milestone.”
Representing National Security Adviser Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, Kokumo described the proliferation of small arms as “a monstrous challenge to national stability.”
He affirmed the government’s resolve, stating, “The Federal Government is committed to strengthening domestic controls and collaborating internationally to stop illicit arms flows.”
Ribadu also highlighted the threat posed by illegal weapons, noting, “They fuel violent conflicts, crime, and terrorism, threatening our national security.”
Ribadu praised the recent signing of the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons Act 2024 by President Bola Tinubu, saying, “This legislation provides a robust framework to tackle this menace.”
He urged citizens to support security efforts, adding, “As patriotic Nigerians, we must provide information and work together to restore peace and security.”
The event underscores Nigeria’s proactive measures to enhance national security through regional partnerships and legal reforms.
