Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) BEECROFT transferred 45 bags of suspected Indian Hemp, weighing 1,575 kilograms, to the Nigerian Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on Thursday at Apapa, Lagos.
Commodore Paul Nimmyel, represented by the base’s Executive Officer, Capt. Idongesit Udoessien, said the seizure occurred near Ilesha Beach as part of ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking and secure Nigeria’s maritime domain.
Nimmyel revealed that on July 4, the base’s quick response team, acting on reliable intelligence, intercepted two wooden boats near Takwa Bay and Ilesha Beach.
“Our team seized 45 bags of suspected cannabis sativa, though the suspects escaped upon spotting our patrol,” he stated.
He attributed the success to the Navy’s intensified operations under Vice Adm. Emmanuel Ogalla’s leadership, noting, “We remain committed to disrupting criminal activities in our waterways through surveillance, patrols, and intelligence-driven missions.”
The commander emphasized the Navy’s collaboration with other agencies to safeguard lives and property, saying, “NNS BEECROFT’s efforts reflect our dedication to supporting internal security and denying criminals freedom of action.”
He also called on the public to provide timely information to bolster security, commending his team’s vigilance and professionalism.
NDLEA Marine Command’s Deputy Commander, Emmanuel Morrison, confirmed that the seized substances would be stored at the agency’s central exhibit storehouse and destroyed upon receiving authorization.
“We deeply appreciate the Nigerian Navy’s relentless efforts in combating illegal activities, especially in our waterways,” Morrison said.
