The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), and the House of Representatives Committee on National Population, are seeking areas of collaboration towards the achievement of the Commission’s mandate and fostering a harmonious working relationship.
To achieve this objective, a retreat themed Identity Management and Legislative Oversight, was recently organised by the Commission in Abuja with the aim of re-acquainting the committee members with the activities, mandate and mission of the NIMC.
Speaking at the retreat, the NIMC Director-General, Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote, explained that the event was also meant to provide the needed environment for the lawmakers and the management of the Commission to identify possible areas of collaboration and build a harmonious working relationship towards the success of digital identity in Nigeria.
Commenting on the retreat focus, the Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Population, Hon. Okunjimi Odimayo, commended the DG of NIMC and her team for their effort at raising the Commission’s profile within a short period since her resumption of office.
He pledged that the Committee would give maximum support to the NIMC to ensure it achieves its mandate.
The retreat had in attendance members of the House of Representatives Committee on Population and management staff of the NIMC.
Established by the NIMC Act No. 23 of 2007, the Commission has the mandate to establish, own, operate, maintain and manage the National Identity Database in Nigeria.
It operates and regulates matters concerning national identify in Nigeria with services covering enrolment and issuance of the popular National Identification Number (NIN), National e-ID, Identity Verification, data harmonization and authentication.
