North West University, Sokoto (NWUS), has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the University of Lahore, Pakistan, in a move aimed at strengthening academic cooperation and international engagement.
The Vice Chancellor of NWUS, Professor Mukhtar Umar Bunza, disclosed this on Monday while briefing journalists in Sokoto, describing the agreement as the institution’s first major international partnership.
According to him, the development represents a significant step in the university’s drive to raise educational standards and expand its global footprint.
While highlighting the importance of the agreement, Professor Bunza said it reflects NWUS’s commitment to knowledge exchange, capacity building, and international academic partnerships.
He added that the MoU also fulfils one of the core visions of the Founder and Pro-Chancellor, Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, to promote higher education through cross-border collaboration.
“As you are aware, universities today must operate within an interconnected global ecosystem where research, innovation, and professional training are strengthened through collaboration. The agreement the NWUS has just signed represents a strategic step toward positioning this institution within that ecosystem.”
The Vice Chancellor explained that the agreement is designed to promote academic and professional cooperation between both institutions.
He said the partnership seeks to “facilitate mutual cooperation in teaching, research, training, and scholarly exchange, while creating opportunities that enhance institutional capacity and broaden learning experiences for students and faculties alike.”
Professor Bunza noted that the collaboration would harness the complementary strengths of both universities to promote innovation, improve professional competence, and contribute to the advancement of medical and allied disciplines.
“Within this framework, both universities have agreed to explore areas of cooperation that include academic exchange programmes, joint research initiatives, curriculum enrichment, professional training, and knowledge-sharing platforms.”
He further stated that the partnership would support joint seminars, conferences, workshops, and other scholarly activities aimed at promoting intellectual engagement and best practices in higher education.
This, he said, is in addition to “providing avenues for staff and student mobility, collaborative academic development, and the sharing of institutional expertise.”
Professor Bunza expressed optimism that the agreement would position NWUS for greater global relevance and improved academic output in the years ahead.
