The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command, has arrested eight suspected vandals.
The acting spokesman of the NSCDC, FCT Command, Monica Ojobi, in a statement on Thursday, said the suspects were arrested over the vandalism of public infrastructure in different parts of the nation’s capital.
While parading the suspects at the Command headquarters in Wuse, Abuja, the NSCDC Commandant in the FCT Olusola Odumosu said that the arrest was in continuation of a full-scale assault against vandals.
“These arrests came on the heels of our resolve to chase vandals out of the FCT through a renewed operational strategy and I am glad we are getting results.
“My covert operatives with the Critical National Assets and Infrastructure Tactical Team (CNAI) are in town on 24-hour surveillance and monitoring to prevent any occurrence of vandalism, especially at this period of the year.”
Ojobi said four of the suspects were arrested a the Idu Layout CITEC at about 2:10 am with vandalized solar panel poles.
The remaining suspects were nabbed along the Bannex-Gishiri axis while trying to convey five already vandalized street light poles at about 1:30 am, the NSCDC said.
“Exhibits recovered included Five (5) Vandalized gigantic street light poles, One (1) vandalized solar panel pole and over forty (40)pieces of iron rods,” the statement added.
“Investigation is still ongoing and suspects will be consequently charged to court accordingly.”
Following the arrest, Odumosu expressed concern over the destruction of public infrastructure by hoodlums but warned saboteurs to relocate from Abuja.
“We are not going to allow the efforts of the Hon Minister of FCT in infrastructural development to be sabotaged by some good-for-nothing individuals working against the state,” he said.
“I will continue to warn you to relocate out of the FCT because we are not backing down until vandalism is brought to an end in the Federal Capital Territory.”
