Nigerian Union of Pensioners (NUP) has dismissed reports of organizing a protest regarding the Federal Government’s recently approved N32,000 pension increment.
Deputy National President, Chief Abdulahi Onu, clarified this during a press interaction in Abuja on Thursday.
This follows threats by some pensioners to demonstrate over the non-implementation of the N32,000 pension increase and the N25,000 palliative funds designated for pensioners, among other concerns.
Onu emphasized that the NUP leadership disassociates itself from any such protest, describing it as unauthorized and not reflective of the union’s official stance.
“The national leadership, representing pensioners nationwide, is content with the ongoing engagements by the Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate (PTAD) regarding the N32,000 increment and efforts to clear outstanding arrears,” Onu stated.
He expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for initiatives aimed at improving pensioners’ welfare and urged all NUP members to refrain from participating in any rumored protests initiated by certain groups.
Onu further noted that PTAD is actively addressing pensioners’ concerns about the increment, expressing confidence that the agency’s efforts will soon yield results.
“No individual chapter or group should unilaterally issue circulars announcing protests or industrial actions without the approval of the national leadership,” he added, stressing that such actions do not align with the principles of a responsible trade union.
Onu revealed that groups, including the NIPOST Lagos Branch and other factions, have been spreading information about planned protests over the increment and arrears.
He clarified that the NUP will not endorse or join any demonstrations organized by splinter groups or individuals acting outside the union’s recognized structures.
