The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has praised President Bola Tinubu for honouring Prof. Humphrey Nwosu, the former Chairman of the National Electoral Commission (NEC), who conducted the historic June 12, 1993 presidential election.
National Publicity Secretary of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Dr. Ezechi Chukwu, in a statement on Thursday, described the conferment of the Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON) award on Nwosu as a welcome development.
“The idea of honouring him is welcomed, though it is late, but at least we appreciate the fact that he has been honoured,” Chukwu said.
Ohanaeze Ndigbo urged President Tinubu to name the INEC Headquarters after Nwosu, citing his crucial role in Nigeria’s democracy.
“It is also our desire that INEC Headquarters should be named after Prof Humphrey Nwosu for the virtue of his role in Nigeria’s democracy during the military,” Chukwu added.
The group also expressed concern over the economic challenges facing Nigerians, calling for extensive reforms to alleviate hardship and poverty.
“The reforms which the Federal Government has embarked on are yet to have a human face in the lives of Nigerians,” Chukwu noted.
Ohanaeze Ndigbo emphasized the need for restructuring to fix the economy and insecurity.
“Without restructuring, it would be difficult to fix both the economy and insecurity,” Chukwu stressed, highlighting the importance of fiscal federalism, resource control, and devolution of power.
